Your Acupuncture Practitioners
My journey into East Asian medicine started in 1994 when I started practcing Wu Style Tai Qi. Four years of Japanese shiatsu bodywork training followed. Keen to learn more I studied Traditional Chinese acupuncture and undertook a clinical apprenticeship. I then returned to the Japanese arts and studied a number of specialised acupuncture systems in the UK, Europe and Japan. Whilst running a busy practice, I also worked in NHS pain and addiction clinics. Since 2011 I have been travelling regularly to Japan to observe and train intesively in the clinics of master practitioner Masakazu Ikeda sensei and Edward Obaidey who practice Traditional Japanese Acupuncture. I am enormously grateful to them for sharing their deep knowledge and understanding of this powerful healing art. I offer support to the art by organising post-graduate workshops. I am part of the publishing team for the North American Journal of Oriental Medicine and editorial team for the English publications of Ikeda Masakazu sensei’s teachings.

Thursday, Saturdays & Sundays
My interest in East Asian medicine began when I was living in Japan and studying shiatsu. After returning to the UK I qualified in Chinese acupuncture in 1991. This was followed by further intensive clinical training in a teaching hospital in Nanjing, China. Since 1998, I have specialised in Japanese acupuncture systems, training in the UK, the Netherlands and Japan. I taught for many years as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Westminster and as a guest lecturer at other acupuncture colleges in the UK. This is my 30th year in practice and my clinical experience includes work in an NHS GP practice alongside my private practice. I am passionate about making Japanese acupuncture more widely available to practitioners and patients, organising and teaching post-graduation courses in the UK and abroad.

Tools & Techniques
Acupuncture Needles
Needles come in many shapes and sizes. Some are used for insertive needling whilst others merely stimulate the surface of the skin. They can be made of stainless steel, silver or gold. Japanese acupuncture is reknown for it’s refined needling techniques which aim to produce a pleasant and relaxing experience.
Moxibustion
The word Moxa (or Mogusa) literally means “Burning Herb”. The practice of moxibustion has been around for thousands of years and is inextricably linked to the practice of acupuncture and East Asian medicine. Buring moxa provides energy to the body in a way that is difficult to achieve with the use of needles alone.
Cupping
Cupping is the term applied to a technique that uses small glass or bamboo cups as suction devices which are placed on the skin to disperse and break up stagnation and congestion by drawing congested blood, energy or other humors (such as phelm and blood) to the surface.
Japanese Acupuncture
Japanese acupuncture shares the same philosphy and history as Traditional Chinese acupuncture but often differs in application and technique.
We believe that the body’s most responsive “ki” (life energy) lies on, or just beneath the skin surface so deep or strong stimulation is mostly unnecessary.
Moxibustion a prominent feature The warming of acu-points by burning the herb mugwort directly or indirectly on the skin.
Emphasis on touch In Japan, acupuncture and massage are traditional professions of the blind who naturally refined and perfected diagnosis and treatment by touch.
Less is more we use the minimum stimulation necessary.
Virtually painless Japanese needles are extremely fine and highly polished for painless insertion.
